Maybe you should talk with your wife's doctor and have the doctor explain it to you, apparently there is a reason for this scheduled hysterectomy. Either you or your wife should call the doctor and make an appointment to talk about it.
I had a vaginal hysterectomy in 83, because of thickening of the uterine walls which caused excessive bleeding. It did take about 6 weeks to get to where I could do things after the surgery. Maybe they have better ways of doing them since so many years have past.

Does anyone know how long it takes for the swelling to go down after an abdominal hysterectomy?

I had the same procedure about 2 weeks ago and the swelling did start to go down after about a week. I do still have some swelling which feels like a knot in my abdomen, which the doctor said was normal. I had 1 18 centimeter fibroid. I seriously have lost a whole pant size and about 5 lbs since surgery. Just give it time and get lots of rest.
